“There is no Core without the Floor” has become my new favorite phrase.
I have been a certified Personal and Pilates Fitness Trainer for over 30 years, and have developed a passionate interest in refining the core. I wanted to understand exactly what it was and how best to facilitate training and development.
I wanted to know the core’s effect on strength, speed and endurance and how it develops superior breathing techniques prevents groin pulls, and migraines.
Then, when I discovered there was more to the core which is called the pelvic floor and its crucial involvement in Pregnancy and Postpartum, Cycling, Golf, Incontinence, Posture and Erectile Dysfunction, and a whole new world opened up for me. It was my ‘inner’ world that time had forgot.
I have spent my career on ‘outer’ voluntary muscle recruitment, the brain and nervous system hoping to gain a clearer perspective in the journey to the center of my ‘own’ core.
In 2008, it all finally came together. My continued curiosity and a general attitude of excitement and interest led me to Dr. Theresa Nesbitt OBGYN, Chicago Illinois.
Today, I work with Dr. Theresa Nesbitt and teach her programs worldwide, personally and via SKYPE.

Other areas of research and development include Correct Retraining of the Core, Evolutionary Aspects of the Pelvis, , The Brain, Mental Brain, Emotional Brain and Physical Brain. Anatomy Awareness – Movement Mapping (proprioception awareness and recalibrating inefficient movement patterns).
I want to share with you some important information, or if you will, another perspective that perhaps you haven’t heard before and when understood and integrated, will alleviate the areas discussed meaning FREEDOM.
ABOUT THE CORE -Developmentally speaking, the core consists of two layers – inner and outer; the inner layer contains and compresses internal organs, as the outer layer wraps and reinforces the inner core.
Think of an open suitcase with a heap of clothes: when you close the suitcase, the inner core is activated; when you flip the locks and wrap the straps — that is like the outer core, stabilizing and strengthening.
The right order is imperative; as you do not want to pull on the straps until you have closed the suitcase good and tight.
The inner core is the canister made of the diaphragm (on top), the thoracolumbar fascia (on the sides) and the pelvic floor muscles (on the bottom). They all activate involuntarily and in unison. The outer core is comprised of the abdominal muscles — which can be directly and voluntarily controlled and trained.
Awareness training activates and tones the inner core – that super-strong base of the entire core. It is not about Kegels, which train the exterior voluntary ‘flicker’ muscles – they are the ‘icing on the cake’ but who wants a cake made only of icing?
So if you are training your abdominals, the outer core, by doing crunches etc., without the awareness and ‘preactivation’ of the inner core , you are basically squeezing your insides out like a tube of toothpaste without the cap!
Yes, this eventually can result in incontinence, prolapsed uterus etc, hip, back and knee pain for women, and with men, groin pulls, hernias, tight hamstrings and glutes, which means LESS POWER!
ABOUT KATHLEEN – Speaker, Author and Fitness Expert, Kathleen Pagnini, has been a Certified Fitness and Pilates Trainer working with groups and private individuals since 1984. She is Creator/Producer of Pilates and Chocolate fitness DVD.

Kathleen teaches classes and programs for local Health Care Facilities and offers Post Physical Therapy Corrective Movement and Pelvic Floor / Anatomy Awareness Training.
Passionate about golf, she brings her knowledge onto the course where she sees immediate results with further, straighter shots with more accuracy and less back pain with her clients.
Kathleen conducts workshops in the United States and around the World.
She has a Private Studio for local clientele and offers Virtual Studio Sessions via SKYPE. Workshops and school Sport Programs on correct retraining of the core.
